Joan Hammersmith is a multifaceted professional whose career spans business writing, creative endeavors, education, and counseling. With a rich background in developing a wide range of business materials, program development, and assessments, Joan has made significant contributions to various communities and organizations. Her clients include community stakeholders, Indian Bands, sister colleges, and international audiences, showcasing her versatility and commitment to fostering growth and development.

Business Writing and Consultancy

As a business writer, Joan has crafted numerous materials that have been instrumental in program development and assessment creation. Her expertise extends to writing grant applications, serving as a research assistant, and performing administrative duties for Broxbourne International Inc. from 2004 to 2022. Joan’s role as a consultant at SIAST’s Extension and Marketing Division involved designing, developing, and selling training programs for community clients. She adeptly managed budgets, prepared annual reports, and delivered workshops and presentations on an international scale.

Teaching and Counseling

Joan’s dedication to education is evident from her tenure as an instructor at SIAST Woodland Campus, where she developed curricula and taught in the Chemical Dependency Counseling Program from 1996 to 2004. Her experience as a counselor in a prison setting, working with violent offenders and addicted men, further highlights her commitment to making a difference in the lives of those facing significant challenges.

Creative Writing and Speaking Engagements

A talented creative writer, Joan has authored “The Raw Bold Truth,” a memoir published in 2013, and “Messages From There,” an unpublished book of inspirational stories. Her blog, “Love and Other Losses,” and her unpublished children’s book, “Stories from the Heart,” showcase her ability to connect with readers across different genres. Joan’s creative works have been recognized in various contests and exhibitions, including the Writers Union of Canada Book Contest, where she placed in the top ten out of 500 entries, and international book fairs in Guadalajara, London, and Beijing.

Joan is also a seasoned speaker, delivering presentations to diverse audiences, including client groups, schools, colleges, and special interest groups. She has been involved in numerous writing workshops and has worked closely with notable writers such as Alice Kuipers, Yvette Nolan, and Don Paulson. Her efforts to nurture emerging writers in Saskatoon were recognized in 2011, further cementing her role as a mentor and advocate for the writing community.

Educational Background

Joan holds a Bachelor of Education with Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan, majoring in Special Education. She also pursued a master’s degree in Research Psychology at California Coast University, completing partial requirements for the degree.

Personal Interests

Beyond her professional life, Joan is an individual of diverse interests. She has served as the Treasurer of the national Sober Riders Motorcycle group and is currently enrolled in courses on Medical Intuition and Past Life Regression. A practicing psychic medium, Joan is also studying the Dutch language through Babbel, reflecting her continuous pursuit of knowledge and personal growth.
